Sustainable construction considers ethics at every stage of the build. This includes having environmentally friendly practices, social awareness, fair labour, and more.

Why is sustainable construction important?

The construction industry is highly damaging to the natural world. Land destruction, pollution, and fossil fuels all harm the environment and air quality.

To lessen this strain, it is crucial for construction companies to use sustainable practices. Sustainability within construction requires businesses to commit to responsible practices across the construction process.

How to achieve sustainability in construction

When planning a construction project, sustainable processes should remain at the forefront.

Projects should impact the local and surrounding area as little as possible. Avoid building on important environmental or cultural sites. Furthermore, consider the carbon footprint if you do demolition or tree felling.

Design buildings should be energy efficient and use sustainable materials. Install low flow plumbing and repairable appliances to improve energy usage.

Renewable energy sources like solar panels can also greatly improve long-term sustainability. Build buildings from renewable resources and recycled materials, such as reclaimed wood, bamboo, or recycled steel. Abide by ethical labour practices and avoid harming ecosystems when sourcing materials.

Focus on reducing waste and CO2 emissions when building. For example, a modular battery system can power vehicles and tools with solar energy. Recycle leftover materials or use them in other projects.

Benefits of sustainable construction practices

As well as helping the environment, sustainability has many benefits. Reusing materials and prioritising energy efficiency can reduce operational costs. It also ensures companies are compliant with Net Zero targets.

The increase in sustainable practices has strongly improved innovation in the industry. Clients are interested in unique and modern designs, especially if they are good for the earth.

Sustainable buildings last longer and are more likely to remain standing for many years.

At FormFive, we use a range of sustainable building practices in our developments. For more information, call 01604 218 700 or email hello@formfivegroup.co.uk.
