Autumn Budget 2026: Plenty of Ambition, but at What Cost?
Another Budget, another round of announcements, promises and commitments designed to stimulate the UK economy. So, what does the Budget actually mean for the businesses expected to deliver the government's ambitions?

Another Budget, another round of announcements, promises and commitments designed to stimulate the UK economy.
But sitting here as the owner of a construction business, my immediate question is a relatively simple one:
What does the Budget actually mean for the businesses expected to deliver the government's ambitions?
Challenges within the construction industry
Since launching FormFive in 2021, I've experienced first-hand the challenges of growing a construction business through an incredibly difficult market.
Rising operational costs, pressure on margins, labour shortages, increasing compliance requirements, and maintaining healthy cash flow are everyday realities in our sector.
Whilst the 2026 Autumn Budget offers some positive announcements, I'm not convinced it goes far enough in addressing the challenges facing the construction industry at ground level.
The government's commitment to an additional £1.5 billion for social and affordable housing, alongside its wider ambitions for housing delivery, is certainly welcome. Likewise, the continued commitment to long-term capital investment should create opportunities across the construction and property sectors.
But announcing investment, and actually getting projects delivered, are two different things.
We need to see projects moving beyond political announcements, feasibility studies and planning discussions into actual construction. Until projects reach site, investment announcements don't pay wages, support subcontractors or keep construction businesses operating.
The industry needs a consistent and reasonable pipeline of work, not simply ambitious targets.
The Pressure on Construction SMEs
One of my biggest concerns is the continued pressure being placed on small and medium-sized construction businesses.
These are the businesses employing local people, investing in apprentices, supporting local communities, and delivering projects across our towns and counties.
Yet they are often the businesses carrying the greatest financial risks.
Whilst the Autumn Budget 2026 includes measures intended to support businesses and households, the underlying commercial pressures facing construction SMEs remain significant.
Every increase in employment costs, materials, insurance, fuel or compliance must be absorbed somewhere. And in a competitive tendering environment, passing those costs on to clients is rarely straightforward. Margins are already tight, and many contractors are competing for projects at levels that leave very little room for error.
I welcome any government commitment that encourages investment, supports housing delivery and creates opportunities for our industry.
But I would encourage those making the decisions to spend more time speaking directly with the businesses responsible for delivering these ambitions. Not just the major national developers and contractors, but the regional main contractors, SMEs, independent specialists and local supply chains that form the backbone of our industry.
Supporting the future of construction
The construction industry does not necessarily need more promises.
We need greater certainty, fairer commercial conditions, a consistent pipeline of opportunities and an environment where businesses can grow sustainably.
At FormFive, we will continue doing what we have always set out to do: building strong relationships, supporting our supply chain and delivering quality projects for our clients.
But there must be recognition that the businesses doing the building need support too.
The government has outlined its ambitions. Now it's time to create the conditions for our industry to deliver them.
Because ultimately, you cannot build a stronger economy without a stronger construction industry.
